drawn to dig

drawn to dig
in a puddle in the middle
of the mud
freshly laid.
remnants removed
to make room
for the remains
of this day.
so i look to you
for the mercy i crave
in canvassing
this mortal brain.
for i am left
with the longing
of living right now;
of breathing, if just for today.
with an arsenal of emotions
left to be arranged
meticulously locked up
to prevent change.
for change has the gravity
of ten thousand suns,
where stability is simply
a callow diversion.
holding fast to the fusion
of a cause long gone;
like the forgotten words
of a passing song,
that i hum to myself
as rain softens the rigid
ground in which
i am drawn to dig.
